Nov. 25, Tuesday: Origami Ornament Workshop

Come and learn how to make origami ornaments that can be used for holiday decorations or other special days. Time permitting, you may be able to make a few.

Nov. 25, Tuesday 3 -5 p.m. in the Stevens Rotunda.

This workshop is grade 3 and higher. Registration is required. Please sign up in the Children’s Room.

This is FREE workshop is supported by the Friends of the Stevens Memorial Library.

Nov. 10 through Dec. 20: Annual Holiday Food for Fines

From Monday, Nov. 10 through Saturday, Dec. 20, the Stevens Memorial Library is accepting donations instead of collecting fines. There are some guidelines to follow; the most important to remember is a person must come into the Stevens Memorial Library to take advantage of this grace period. Donations (unopened, non-perishable box and can foods — not expired, please — or toiletries) may be brought to the Main Circulation Desk or the Children’s Room Circulation Desk to have your library record cleared.

Eligible fines: current fines returned in Stevens and older fines on your record.

Ineligible charges: late museum pass fees and the cost of lost or damaged library materials.

Items donated should equal the cost of the amount of fines due.

This annual holiday program gives patrons an oppportunity to clear their records while helping community members. All donations are given to local food pantries to distribute.

Nov. 22, Sat. - The Great Debaters: a movie and dinner conversation

Watch the Great Debaters film, then stay for a light buffet and dinner conversation. Dr. William Smith, Executive Director of the Center for Diversity in the Communitcation Industries of Emerson College, will lead the conversation. Dr. Smith’s extensive background as an educator, in diversity relations, and as a film-maker himself, brings much to a conversation.

Nov. 22, Sat. from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room. This program is FREE, but PRE-REGISTRATION is required to allow for meal planning. Please register at the Reference Desk.

This it the final 1 Book, 1 Community Program event for the year.

The Great Debaters is set in the 1930s, telling the story of coach Melvin Tolsen and the debate team at small, black Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Their dream is to compete on equal footing with white college debate teams. Their success results in a debate at Harvard University. This film was inspired by a true story. Rated PG-13, the film contains language and events relating to this time period in history. It is recommended for adults, young adults and possibly upper middle school students.

1 Book, 1 Community, Lots of Conversation

The Stevens Library 2008 “1 Book, 1 Community” events will begin in a few weeks. Start reading now, if you haven’t already. “1 Book” programs encourage people to come together as a community for conversation, fun, and fellowship.

This year’s titles are: MARCH by Geraldine Brooks (adult), LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY by Gary Schmidt (middle school), and PRISCILLA AND THE HOLLYHOCKS by Ann Broyles (youngest readers). The books are available at the Library.

What’s coming up? Book discussions, movies, craft activities, visits by an author and an illustrator, and a special historical person performance.

Government Information Online: Ask a Librarian

The U.S. Government Printing Office offers a free, virtual reference service, “Government Information Online: Ask a Librarian” www.Govtinfo.org. The site offers up-to-date resources regarding primaries, caucuses, and the processes leading up to the Presidential elections next November. The service is managed by the University of Chicago at Illinois and is supported by nearly twenty public, state and academic libraries throughout the United States. All participants are designated Federal depository libraries in the U.S. Government Printing Office’s Federal Depository Library Program. Many are also official depository libraries for their other types of governments and public agencies. The service is available (U.S. Central Standard Time): Monday through Thursday, 8am to 6pm, Friday 8am to 5pm.
